Disaster
Preparedness for Your Pets
Remember
your pets when assemblingyour disaster preparedness kit.
During and immediately after anearthquake, fire, flood, storm or
other disaster, pets just like humans, experience a great deal of trauma,
confusion and anxiety. In this state, your pet might become aggressive.
•Use
caution whenapproaching your pet and comfort him/her.
•Check your pet for injuries.
•Keep your pet confined in your yard or house,
as chaos or aftershocks might occur.
• Check fencing for damage before putting your
pet back into your yard.
•Listen to local emergency broadcast radio stations
for information on emergency
shelters and holding areas for all your pets, including livestock and
farm animals.
•Stock
up on:
(minimum 7 days)
1. Pet Food (remember livestock and farm animals)
2. Manual Can Opener
3. Bottled Water
4. Bowls, Water Pails
5. Clean-up supplies, i.e.plastic bags and disinfectant,
pooper scooper
6. Extra Brush, Collar, Rope
7. Blanket
8. Pet First Aid Kit
Including:
•Hydrogen Peroxide (for cuts, wounds, and poisonings)
•Betadine Solution (non-stinging iodine) for wounds
•Neosporin Ointment - antibiotic for burns and scrapes
• If your pet requires special medication, be sure you have an ample
supply.
•
Keep your pets' vaccinations up-to-date and keep a license tag
and identification tag on him/her at all times. |
